Gear Review: Marmot Exum Jacket

Simply stated, the Marmot Exum jacket is a powerhouse GORE-TEX mountaineering shell that excels in the harshest conditions. In fact, I’d feel safe wearing this thing while hiking Everest, but I’m just a snowshoer (nothing short of exceptional, I might add). And, I’d endorse the Exum as my shell jacket of choice – something every shoer should have in his or her shoeing arsenal.

I first tested the Exum while shoeing Henderson Mine in Colorado. It was windy and frigid – ripe conditions for a good shell test. I left the house with only a reliable base layer and a cotton shirt to help soak up the sweat. Once I put the Exum over the two layers and started snowshoeing, I was fine. My body core stayed warm and I never felt too uncomfortable.

There were periodic moments of intense wind that pushed through the open areas of the jacket and chilled my perspiration. I’ve experienced far worse with less reliable gear (I won’t go any further than that).

One thing that really impresses me about the Exum is its weight: 15 ounces. It’s completely GORE-TEX’d and has features even skiers will adore. Additionally, another impressive feature is the Exum’s 100% waterproofness (a made-up word, but allowable in this reference). The jacket’s seams are reinforced and provide automatic superiority over other selections (and from the best of manufacturers).

Marmot’s products just plain rock – especially for snowshoers. The Exum is a clear example of Marmot’s strength in the outdoor clothing/gear industry. In fact, the Exum reminds me of military-grade gear. It’s that good. And, dare I say it – the Exum is powerful. I’d suggest grabbing one for your next snowshoeing trip – it’s cold out there.
