Gear Review: KEEN Sunriver High Boot

image001

At first glance it was hard to take this purple boot seriously. After all, I usually wear hiking shoes for snowshoeing, adding gaiters to keep snow out of my pant legs. But after the first wear, I became a convert: the KEEN Sunriver High Boot has the comfort and slip-proof fit of a hiking boot while featuring a waterproof insulated upper–basically a two-in-one-and-then-some.

The shoes were comfortable to wear for hours at a time and were lightweight (just over a pound each) and ultra flexible. In fact, I never felt the need to change shoes for our après-snowshoe outings.

The faux fur lining kept snow out of the boot and my calves and feet dry. The 200 g Keen.Warm insulation makes the boot a good choice for anyone who suffers from cold toes in the snow, although the breathable waterproof outer helps regulate heat. (As in, my feet stayed at just the right temperature, never getting too hot or cold.)

The Sunriver proved to be a good general snow boot too, maintaining traction in the icy parking lot, staying snug, warm and dry while traipsing through snowbanks before stepping into snowshoes.

The boot comes in fun colors–in addition to purple it’s offered in yellow and blue–and it’s also available in a more understated black.

MSRP: $130
