The Canyon Challenge: Running Rim-to-Rim-to-Rim in the Grand Canyon

The Earth yawns in front of me, opening to one of its grandest chasms. I can't see this hole or the rest of the world, for that matter. All of it is gobbled up by the velvety black curtain of very early morning. I turn on my headlamp so it illuminates a circle of light on the path in front of me and begin to run. I'm descending into the Grand Canyon from its South Rim but, because of the darkness, I only know it from the map.

Arizona Don’t Know Snow

The awful rumors are true. Arizona gets snow. For people living up in the Northland, in and around Flagstaff and the Coconino National Forest, winter is not that much different from winter anywhere else: It's cold, we slip on the ice when we've had a few-too-many, and we shiver, too. In fact, this winter has been the second wettest winter on record, with 23.7 inches of precipitation since Sept. 1. For the Peaks District of the Coconino National Forest, that has meant snow, snow, and snow.
