Gear Review: SteriPEN Adventurer Opti with Solar Charging Case

I've always been a big supporter of MSR's water filtration products.  In fact, I still own and use an older model from the 90s.  And it works great!  But what I've been suggesting to fellow snowshoers and hikers is to use the SteriPEN in conjunction with a filtration system – especially on long backcountry trips.

The eVent Waterproof Membrane, the Rab Latok Alpine Jacket…

...and when the two are combined, you have a badass all-weather jacket that is lightweight and lets the sweat out as you move swiftly on the trail.  In other words, the eVent fabric breathes via a Direct Venting Technology – as it's referred to.  Instead of multiple steps in the breathing process, the eVent fabric does it in one step; it vents directly out of the jacket, simple.  However, while it seems uncomplicated, the GE-owned eVent is a force/fabric to be reckoned with – especially in the cold weather elements.

Oboz Firebrand II: Rock Solid, Waterproof Shoes for the Snow, Ice, Dirt and Mud

Wearing the Oboz Firebrand II shoes – strapped in snowshoes or snowshoe-free – is like wearing a bulletproof vest for your feet.  Or better yet, the Firebrands are like robotic moon shoes that are engineered for an all-terrain galactic jaunt.  They resemble a pair of rock climbing shoes on some crazy steroids – enough to make even Barry Bonds wince.  Although lightweight, the Firebrands are shockingly sturdy and rigid.  Normally, this is not the best way to describe a comfortable shoe.  But what the hell – I done did it.

Thinsulate Thermal Insoles: Offering Snowshoeing and Trail Running Footwear New Life

While visiting the 2011 Outdoor Retailer Winter Market trade show, I met with the good people at powerhouse company, 3M.  As you may know, 3M owns several brands, including ScotchGard, Post-it, and many others.  3M also owns Thinsulate – the “secret ingredient” for insulating a number of products in today's outdoor industry.  My Thinsulate experience – aside from The North Face jacket hanging in my closet – ignited some hope for my existing footwear.  The Thinsulate Thermal Insoles offered a footwear revival and supported the further use of some of my favorite pairs of shoes.

Icebreaker Socks Designed With Snowshoers in Mind

I've mentioned it before, and I'll mention it again: Merino wool is all the rage nowadays.  The difference with many companies is how the wool is handled before going into commercial production and the overall design of the gear.  Icebreaker stands by its wool, which originates in the mountains of New Zealand.  The company also stands by its designs.  I believe the Icebreaker's socks are designed and manufactured with snowshoers in mind: They wick-away moisture, protect with an additional layer, and are designed to support all foot types.  They can also withstand a great amount of pressure and abuse during a long snowshoe race or backcountry outing.

KEEN Alaska Boots: Ideal for Polar Expeditions and Snow Shoveling Excursions

Typical during the spring months, there is deep snow to contend with in some regions of the world.  And this snow can sometimes be measured in feet, rather than inches.  To venture out in the world – from the far reaches of the Antarctic to the driveways of American suburbia – a reliably warm boot that has “quick on and quick off” features is required.  Suburban driveway shoveling and on-the-fly snowshoeing is my reality.  Sitting in the coat closet near the door to my garage I have my KEEN Alaska boots prepared for service.

On the Trail, On the Way to the Trail, In the Office – The Hydro Flask is a Workhorse

The Hydro Flask accomplishes what the traditional water bottle cannot – no harmful plastics, only environmental-friendly reusability.  It's a workhorse in my gear arsenal (and has been for several months).  It keeps your drink hot for 12 hours.  Or it keeps it cold for 24 hours.  It doesn't sweat.  Its stainless steel, double-wall, vacuum-sealed structure is virtually impenetrable.  It also has a lifetime warranty; it's recyclable and is freeze-proof.  And that's just scratching the surface.

The Art of Snowshoeing Perfected by the Québécoise

The Québécoise – also known as citizens of Québec City – embrace the snow.  They embrace it out of necessity.  Yet, that embrace doesn't come at a loss of love for winter, but an appreciation.  To accurately capture how the Québécoise live happily with long winters and a consistent deep snow pack, you must celebrate with them.  From the ice sculptures that rest outside the doorways of quaint retail shops to the elaborate Carnaval de Québec, the winter season is a reluctant lover that sometimes outlasts its stay.  But it's a love affair that the Québec City townspeople choose to observe – using the sculpting of snow and ice as the Carnaval's founding fascination.  Within this fête is an appreciation for winter sports and the city's rich history.  Snowshoeing is no exception.  Behind every snowshoer in Québec, you'll find a passion and devotion for the city … and Canada.

Columbia Heat Elite Jacket and Mountain Guard Hat Offer Omni-Heat Snowshoeing Science

Columbia's Heat Elite Jacket and Mountain Guard Hat are great examples of the company's Omni-Heat technology at work.  The Heat Elite's combination of thermal insulation and reflective features provide the ultimate warmth in cold weather conditions.  It's most redeeming quality comes from the powers of Omni-Heat – retaining heat and keeping it around the body.   The Mountain Guard does the same, keeping heat around the head.  The Heat Elite and Mountain Guard Hat pairing perform as advertised: retaining heat around the most important areas.  While snowshoers have no problem conducting heat, it's the retaining heat part that becomes the most vital element to a long day outdoors.

Traveling to Quebec City with the KEEN Anchorage Boots

If you enjoy the outdoors and travel often, get your hands on a pair of KEEN Anchorage boots.  In a “high-security world,” having a pair of boots that easily slip on and off at the airport is a requirement.  In my experience, I was able to wear the KEEN Anchorage boots on a plane to Quebec City and then use them the next day during a quick snowshoe hike.  My plans were to use the boots only on plane flights and casual dress situations – and they are perfect for that – but they performed flawlessly in snowshoes.  The boots did more than I expected, including keeping my feet dry and warm while steeped in pristine Canadian snow.

The SCARPA Kailash GTX Boots Reflect a Rich History of Craftsmanship and Durability

SCARPA is a rare company.  It has a history that most boot manufacturers don't have: It originated in northern Italy, it's family-owned, and focuses purely on crafting the best boots for mountaineering.  I'd have to agree.  I have a personal history that reflects SCARPA's quality and reputation.  My father bought me a pair of SCARPAs – as my first pair of hiking boots – back in the late 80s.  They were a simple leather boot with a sturdy sole and offered padded ankle support.  I remember waterproofing the boots with beeswax and worked hard to break-in the boots before a long hike.  SCARPA has come a long way in the construction of its boots.

The Omni-Dry Truth: Columbia Peak 2 Peak Jacket

The Columbia Peak 2 Peak Jacket has power to pack against the likes of GORE-TEX and other company's proprietary water/windproofing and breathable materials.  According to Columbia, the almighty GORE-TEX material isn't entirely air permeable.  Columbia's Omni-Dry technology – as the Peak 2 Peak's foundation – is more air permeable than GORE (and 75 percent lighter).  Unlike most hardshell jackets on the market, the Peak jacket touts an ultra breathable membrane.  It didn't come with a softshell jacket and a powder skirt dually zipped within its total structure, similar to a 3-in-1 product.  Nope.  It was just the lonesome hardshell … a lightweight gear phenomenon just waiting for a hardcore snowshoeing test.  But is that enough?

Dressed for Success: Mammut Allows Snowshoers to Go ‘Absolute Alpine’

I'm convinced that the Mammut brand exists solely in the high altitude extremes, the most remotely explored locations, the arctic corners of the Earth, and among the elite adventurers of the world's cragged peaks.  It would be difficult to find the distinguished Mammut logo roaming the Mall of America or waiting for a burger in a lonely booth at a Burger King.  The Switzerland-based Mammut doesn't haunt the stifled realms of living room entertainment centers; it can be found clinging to an ice-covered rocky outcropping on its way to a record-breaking ascent of Denali.  I wore the Mammut brand proudly during my numerous snowshoeing adventures in Colorado – using the Pizol Jacket, Sturdy Pants, Rapid Beanie, and Shelter Ultimate Gloves as my weapons of choice.  This heavenly gear combo is fraught with a divine goal: Go farther on the snow.

Bugathermo Comfort, Total Techlite Warmth

My snowshoeing friends now have Bugathermo envy.  Why?  Because I'm touting a pair of Columbia's Bugathermo Techlite Boots on the snowshoe trails.  What's the big deal?  Simply, these boots are battery-operated, which power an internal heating system with three different settings.  A gimmick?  Not from my experience.  The Bugathermo boots pinpoint the problem that most snowshoers battle with in the winter elements: cold feet.  With batteries and all, the problem is solved.

Breaking the Base Layer Mold: Icebreaker Offers Snowshoers the Solution

Icebreaker makes wearing Merino Wool sexy.  No, really.  When I wear Icebreaker's line of GT200 Sprint Crewe and Legging, I feel slimmer and ready for sexy snowshoeing.  Icebreaker has created a line of active clothing and base layers that perform beyond the everyday options.  And it's all made with Merino Wool fabric from New Zealand.  This performance fabric combines the benefits of synthetics (lightweight and quick drying) and the natural benefits of Merino (warm, breathable, odor resistant, and biodegradable).

The Osprey Kode 30 Backpack: A Snowshoer’s Backcountry Best Friend

It's time to discuss the benefits of using snowshoes for backcountry skiing and snowboarding.  Quite simply, snowshoes can help you get there.  However, additional gear is necessary: an Osprey Kode 30 Backpack.  The Kode 30 is what a winter backcountry explorer requires to lug the ski/snowboard equipment up the mountain and holster the snowshoes for the descent.

GU Chomps, Gels and Brews: Taking Snowshoeing Energy to the Next Level

If variety is the spice of life, then GU Energy products are spicy and full of life.  I have indulged in GU's variety of Chomps Performance Energy Chews, Roctane Ultra Endurance Energy Gels, Energy Gels, GU Electrolyte Brews, and GU Recovery Brews.  They have taken my snowshoeing to the next level.

Salomon Fastpacker Light Merino Crew Socks Ideal for Snowshoe Racers

Merino wool is all the rage nowadays.  Salomon socks certainly offer what outdoor enthusiasts have come to expect from Merino wool (combined with Nylon, Acrylic, NanoGLIDE and Lycra).  Following this recipe, Salomon created the Fastpacker Light Merino Crew Socks.  Engineered for lightweight hiking and backpacking, the Fastpacker socks provide the durability and warmth that snowshoers require in combination with a reliable winter/waterproof boot or shoe.

Sub-Zero Temps? No Problem for the High Peak Mt. Rainier Sleeping Bag

The majority of snowshoers in the world aren't taking overnight trips into the backcountry.  But it's always nice to have a cold-weather sleeping bag on hand for the right situation – especially on a hut-to-hut trip.  High Peak's Mt. Rainier Sleeping Bag offers a waterproof, windproof solution for the snowshoer requiring a minus 20 degrees Fahrenheit rating.

The GoLite Wind River Softshell Pants and Jacket Offer Snowshoeing Bliss

Reviewing snowshoeing pants hasn't been a target product for Snowshoe Magazine.  There is no explanation.  However, with a new season, there will be new gear to test.  For this round, I had the chance to review a powerful softshell set by GoLite: Wind River Pants and Jacket.  Softshells are the gold standard for most snowshoers.  They offer the benefits of layering through the control of breathability, water resistance and advanced range of motion.  The Wind River Pants and Jacket are recommended items for snowshoers, for several reasons.

The Gregory Ritter of Yesterday, the Gregory Miwok of Today

Gregory Mountain Products has been around since 1977, officially founded by Wayne Gregory.  The company has made some great backpacks over the decades.  My first backpack was a Gregory Ritter model.  This great internal frame pack was purchased about 17 years ago at a local outfitter in Denver (can't recall the name of the retailer).  I still have this pack today…and still use it on the trails.  Even after 17 years of hiking and snowshoeing, the Ritter has held up nicely.  Hanging in my basement, next to my Ritter, is the hydration-friendly Miwok pack: A slice of legacy living next to my snowshoeing future.  Nevertheless, I fully expect to have both packs 17 years from today.

This latest storm system was fresh on the heels of the...

Battling the Arctic Air: ColdAvenger Expedition Balaclava

Snowshoeing and other winter sports invite millions of people every year into the snow-covered backcountry.  But a trip on the trail during cold, extreme conditions can come to an end quickly.  For example, prolonged inhalation of cold air can cause damage to the lungs and a person's general health.  It can be painful in the immediate and lung-scarring in the long term.  To help combat this phenomenon – and to relieve a person's noggin from the discomforts of the cold – Talus Outdoor Technologies has developed the ColdAvenger Expedition Balaclava.  The Balaclava has received a permanent place in my “ready at all times” snowshoeing backpack.  Indeed, I never leave home without it.

ColdAvenger Expedition Balaclava

Gear Review: Thule TCDB-1 70 Liter Duffel Bag

If you are familiar with the Thule brand, it's most likely from the many vehicles that don bike, ski and snowboard racks (and carriers) made by the Swedish company.  If you'll notice, these racks are often overloaded with stickers to illustrate the owner's brand loyalty (or their political approach to life).  Surprisingly, Thule is more than just sports equipment racks for the adventurer on the road.  They also have an extensive lineup of luggage and travel bags – ideal for snowshoers.

Gear Review: Brooks-Range Mountaineering Duffel Bag

Designed as a workhorse bag, the Brooks-Range Mountaineering Duffel Bag can carry just about anything in a snowshoer's gear arsenal.  The bag is designed to not only be waterproof but also extremely durable.  After packing multiple pairs of snowshoes in the bag (all with sharp crampon/cleats exposed) and my Kahtoola Microspikes, the material showed no signs of abrasion.

Gear Review: Darn Tough Boot Socks

I always find that socks are a “hit or miss” for an avid snowshoer.  Usually, my toes are the extremities to get cold first while snowshoeing.  But this phenomenon is common among us snowshoers.  Our feet are important! With Darn Tough boot socks, the difference is the high density Merino wool and cushioning that offer more than the average pair of socks for snowshoeing.  Long-lasting warmth helped keep me on the trail.

Clean Bottle: Simple Design, Brilliantly Functional

Using a clean water bottle during a snowshoe outing is important – especially if you hate using hydration systems.  And what better way to make that a reality by carrying the Clean Bottle.  The Clean Bottle concept is simple: A patent-pending screw-off, leak-proof bottom that helps with the cleaning process.

Gear Review: Industrial Revolution Swedish FireSteel

While snowshoeing with a backpack, it's generally a good idea to have a few safety items that are easily hooked onto a zipper or strap loop.  I now have three: a compass, a whistle (from Whistles for Life) and a Swedish FireSteel.  The keychain-like FireSteel is a unique fire starter that can be used in any weather, at any altitude, and used by survival experts and campers alike.  Using the FireSteel – as opposed to strike-anywhere matches – to start a fire feels more primal and elemental.  It's a fire that will be more appreciated.

Wilderness Athlete and the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network’s Golden Gallop

I'm not much of a runner (more of a snowshoer, I guess).  I choose running as my prime workout regimen during the summer, but I don't possess a certain finesse or flare that most runners have acquired over time.  Despite my flawed attempts at running with any dignity – I'm somewhat clumsy – I registered to participate in the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network's Golden Gallop on Saturday, Sept. 11, 2010.  Choosing between a 5K and a 10K, I selected the latter – feeling as though I needed to brutalize myself.  As it would turn out, it became an opportunity to test some Wilderness Athlete products: an Energy & Focus drink mix to start the day, a Performance Bar before the race, an Energy Gel during the race, and a Hydrate & Recover drink mix after the race.  The combination of all four Wilderness Athlete products proved to be exactly what I needed to get through 6.2 miles of tromping around Golden, Colo.

Gear Review: Under Armour Focus 1/4 Zip

I had the opportunity to test the Under Armour Focus 1/4 Zip in extreme conditions within a four-hour time frame.  This included conditions ranging from windy to bitter cold in high elevations.  The Focus was my choice for a recent hike to the summit of Mt. Evans in Colorado.  It was easy to pack and lightweight enough to do some mild rock/boulder scrambling on the way to the top.

Gear Review: High Peak Sinnex Sport Adrenaline 75+10 Backpack

Among my arsenal of backpacks, the High Peak Adrenaline definitely has the largest capacity - approximately 6,000 cubic inches.  This is a pack worthy of European touring.  It's got everything a traveling outdoorsperson needs: durability, comfort and flexibility.

Gear Review: Mountain Hardwear Fluid 26 Backpack

A family that hikes together has more fun than families that stay at home.  This is proven.  The Mountain Hardwear Fluid 26 backpack is what coaxed me and the "fam" out into the backcountry of Colorado this summer.  I used the Fluid 26 as a lightweight daypack combined with a hydration bladder - worked beautifully.  Even with a full three-liter bladder placed in an easy-to-access pocket, there was still room for the essentials: sunscreen, first-aid kit, binoculars, energy bars, emergency gear, and a few other items.  Even better, I let my wife carry the pack: From her reports, it's a great fit for the ladies.  It's comfortable, lightweight and has straps that aren't overbearing.

Gear Review: Montrail Mountain Masochist Trail Running Shoes

With a name like "Mountain Masochist" you'd expect a certain amount of submission...no restraint on the trail.  And that's what you get.  The Masochist is the ultimate trail running shoe for the summer months: Its breathable hydrophobic mesh upper keeps your feet cool.  Its low-ankle design and snug-fitting support helped when pushing through sharp, rugged corners on the trails.  The Gryptonite outersole was durable enough to take the extreme conditions of rocky backcountry trail running.  Of course, I think Gryptonite is an awesome name - hence the reason I used it in the first paragraph and will throughout the remainder of this article.

Gear Review: Osprey Mutant 38 Backpack

When I think of Cortez, Colo., I now think of Osprey Packs.  Based in the small town, the company is near some of the state's purest backcountry destinations.  Osprey is a well-known brand and manufacturer of backpacks.  Stay alert and you'll notice fellow trailgoers sporting Osprey gear, uniquely stamped with the trademark red and gray logo.  I'm new to the Osprey brand - despite it being around since the 70s.  ("You'll have to excuse my friend. He's a little slow. The town is back that way.")  After a day with the Osprey Mutant 38, I was no longer "Dumb and Dumber" ... no longer a virgin to the Osprey brand.  The Mutant 38 "wined and dined" me proper.

Gear Review: Powermonkey eXplorer Portable Solar Charger

Bringing consumer electronics on the trail is always a tough decision.  There are so many to choose from: GPS devices, MP3 players, cell phones, avalanche beacons, VCRs, and others.  Survival and entertainment are the two contributing reasons to lugging all that hardware around the backcountry.  Powering that junk is an entirely different issue, especially when packing additional batteries.  Batteries suck.  They're heavy and not exactly a “green” product – no matter how long they last.  Disposing of “dry” batteries is a nightmare.  Remember, leave no trace – what you pack in, pack it out.  Replace the dependence on the Energizer Bunny with a solar-powered charger.  In this case, use the Powermonkey eXplorer to rule your outdoor electronics.  Go solar on the trail!  Stellar!

Gear Review: Mountain Hardwear Micro Grid Fleece Jacket

I was able to fully appreciate the Mountain Hardwear Micro Grid Fleece Jacket during an outdoor Independence Day celebration in Denver: Thunder and hail storms moved into the area and the temperature dropped quickly.  I threw on the Micro Grid like a Batman uniform – sleek, stylish and ready to fight crime. This was an urban test of its capabilities, but it fundamentally proved that the Micro Grid is indeed a 365-day, year-round jacket.  An alpine trail running assessment would come next.  For snowshoeing, it would have to wait.

Gear Review: Under Armour Impulse Polarized Blue Mirror Sunglasses

Polarized sunglasses make me think of the products marketed on popular infomercials throughout the years – Blue Blockers and HD Vision.  Would I suggest using those for trail running and snowshoeing?  Absolutely not!  When out in the elements, protecting the eyes is highly important – essential is more like it.  In my opinion, it's best to spend some coin on a pair of shades that will offer true polarized protection.  Don't fall for some crappy product with the moniker, “as seen on TV.”  I have adopted the Under Armour's Impulse Polarized Blue Mirror sunglasses as part of my everyday gear on the go and what I take when I'm on the trails.  They sit close to the face and comfortably contour the curves of my oversized skull.

Gear Review: The Merrell Trail Running Trio – Cruise, Tenon and Brookvale

I'm new to Merrell.  So far, I've been impressed.  I was introduced to the brand during a trail running event called the Merrell Oyster Off Road Adventure Race in Glenwood Springs, Colo.  Being the title sponsor, Merrell allowed me to test three different items: the CTR Cruise trail running shoes, Tenon baselayer and Brookvale shell.  This trail running trio was an excellent combination of rugged support and off-road excellence.   Merrell's recipe of style and performance translate into optimal three-season gear.  I'm not entirely sure they'll be optimized for snowshoeing, but that won't hold me back from trying (later, of course).

Do What You Love and Be Rewarded With a Healthy Life

Biking, walking, knitting, gardening- all are hobbies that can be enjoyed by anyone. Eileen Wysocki: A Hero Among Snowshoers

In February 2009, Eileen Wysocki attempted what seemed like the impossible: Setting the record for the most vertical feet snowshoed in a 24-hour period. There wasn't a previous record in the books, but Eileen set the bar high...really high.

Eileen participated in the 24 Hours of Sunlight race at the Sunlight Mountain Resort in Colorado. She set the record at 47.6 miles snowshoed and approximately 25,534 feet in a 24-hour period. Eileen also celebrated her inclusion as a Guinness World Records holder - and the certificate to prove it. In addition, May 29 is now known as “Eileen Wysocki Day” in the town of New Castle, Colo.

Trees of Life

"Out of sight, out of mind."

Have you ever heard somebody utter that phrase?  It's a phrase that seems to be relative to a person's current thought-process: If I don't have to see it, then it's nothing I really care about.

But that's the kind of ignorance that many settle with; they care only about what it is they can reach.  And they only care about what affects their current situation.  Knowing this, would you care if somebody said our mountain forests are dying?  Would you believe it even if you didn't see it?  I hope so.

Gear Review: Honey Stinger Energy Bars and Energy Chews

About a year ago, I was introduced to Honey Stinger Energy Bars via a set of samples I encountered in the mail.  I was an immediate fan.  I've never tasted an energy bar like the Honey Stinger.  Living up to its name, each bar is made with 30 percent USDA certified organic honey.  In addition, each bar includes 10 grams of whey protein, 22 vitamins and minerals, calcium and antioxidants.  When snowshoeing and trail running, they come in handy.  Because I loved the energy bars, I was eager to try the energy chews.  As it turns out, the chews kept my engine running in between energy bar consumption.  And both taste so good.

Gear Review: Outdoor Research Exit Hoody

Most of the Outdoor Research softshell jackets I've tested have been typically waterproof and breathable.  The OR Exit Hoody isn't quite a softshell (not particularly waterproof and mildly breathable), but it is lightweight.  What makes the Exit Hoody appealing to a snowshoer is its Alpin-wool Plus fabric exterior and polyester interior - both combine to be exceptionally warm.

Cool Off During the Summer Heat and Head to Chile for Skiing, Snowboarding, and a Wide Range of Winter Sports

Snowshoe Magazine
For avid fans of skiing, snowboarding and other winter sports, heading to the slopes of Chile makes a cool retreat in the heat of the summer. Chile, one of the Southern Hemisphere's top winter sports destinations, and where numerous professional ski and snowboard teams train during the northern hemisphere summer, is renowned for its superior level of its ski slopes in the majestic Andes and can be...

Gear Review: Keen Obsidian WP Trail Running Shoes

The Keen Obsidian WP shoes are waterproof – making it a great choice for snowshoeing – and durable enough for trail running.  I first used the Obsidians during a trail run near the Snake River Lodge and Spa in Wyoming's Teton Village (near Jackson Hole Ski Resort).  After a tasty breakfast at the Lodge's Gamefish Restaurant, I took a brisk morning run through the Teton National Forest.  That day, I fell in love with a new pair of Keens.

Gear Review: Keen Oregon PCT Hiking Boot

I've never owned a pair of boots like the Keen Oregons.  They've proved to be tough, well constructed and perfect for snowshoeing.  During my trek through Glacier National Park, the Oregons performed flawlessly in a number of changing trail conditions: muddy, icy and snowy.  They were also light enough to wear during my flight from Denver to Kalispell.  I never felt as though the Oregons were too burdensome or got in the way, like most clunky hiking boots.  Keen didn't over-engineer the Oregons to compensate for sturdiness; they weigh in at 24 ounces and are conveniently waterproof.

Gear Review: KT Tape for Snowshoers

“I'm a snowshoer and KT Tape was my idea!”

I wish.  But I certainly think I found a great product for snowshoers.  KT Tape (short for Kinesiology Therapeutic Tape) is a sports tape that's elastic, durable, strong, and provides pain relief and support.  If suffering from sore muscles and joints – or just your classic sports injury – a couple strips of KT Tape will relieve the pains that would normally prevent further activity.  For snowshoeing, it's a wonderful addition to a first aid kit and doesn't take up precious daypack space.

Gear Review: Outdoor Research AlterEgo GORE-TEX Jacket

Throughout the 09/10 snowshoeing season, I used the Outdoor Research AlterEgo Jacket in "emergency" cold weather situations.  I always had it strapped on the right side of my pack so it was accessible at any moment.

Carved By Ice, Explored On Snowshoes: Discovering the Sublimity of Montana’s Glacier National Park

(Please note: After publishing this article, Glacier National Park has gone from 25 named glaciers to 23.)

I was on a search for the true Montana – one of the last American wilderness areas that the masses have yet to alter or manipulate.  Although I wasn't able to cover the majority of Glacier National Park's more than one million acres on snowshoes, I was well satisfied with the meager 18 miles that I checked-off on my "list of things to do before dying."  Among the turquoise lakes, creeks and rivers, I found myself feeling some frustration: It had taken me 33 years to gain an acquaintance with one of Mother Earth's greatest treasures.  Established in 1910, the Park is a memorial to a planet once unharmed by human dominion and sprawl.  I was there to pay homage by snowshoeing among the wilds of a protected land and honor the Park's Centennial commemoration.

Gear Review: Seattle Sports Co. Snow Shovel

There's something about having a shovel strapped to your pack when snowshoeing; it makes you look pretty serious about your shoeing experience.  It says, “That guy is going to a place where the snow is pretty deep.”  Well, yes, that's the ticket.  As the publisher/owner of Snowshoe Magazine, I only go where the snow is deep.  Not really.  I consider myself lucky if I'm out in the backcountry with my trusty snowshoes…and now with my Seattle Sports Co. Snow Shovel.

Gear Review: Arc’teryx Venta SV Softshell Jacket

For the Snowshoemag crew, Arc'teryx has become the holy grail of outdoor gear brands.  Our requests to even touch a garment with an Arc'teryx logo were ignored for the past few years.  Was it some it something we said?  Evidently not, because the pigs have now taken flight and it's getting chilly in hell; we were able to test the Arc'teryx Venta SV Softshell jacket.  Nonetheless, we love supporting Arc'teryx because they make great gear…and they're Canadian.  And nowadays, Canada is all the rage.

Gear Review: Kahtoola Microspikes Traction System

Having a pair of Kahtoola Microspikes on hand is just as important as having a snow shovel in the garage: You need it on occasion when the time is right.  Several times this winter I've used the Microspikes for everyday use and for some light runs around the neighborhood.

Gear Review: Bheestie Bag

Here's a story you can probably relate to, in one way or another:

I was on a snowshoeing trip and decided to stop by a frozen creek.  I needed some water, so I broke open the ice and dropped in my filter.  But that's not all I dropped in the water: My GPS device fell from my backpack and into the water.  Panic.

At the time, I didn't have anything to help dry out my device.  Granted it was submersed for only a few seconds (in extremely cold water).  All I could do was take out the batteries and wrap it in some cloth.  Later, I was happy to discover that it was still working, but the display had some defects and the button reaction time was delayed.  It hasn't worked the same since.

Gear Review: Mountain Hardwear Kramer Softshell Jacket

Back in the mid-Twentieth Century, 2010 predictions indicated people would be wearing futuristic jackets that had removable hoods and powder skirts, and combined waterproof breathable fabric and stretchy softshell panels.  They were right.  In 2010, Snowshoe Magazine tested the Mountain Hardwear Kramer Softshell Jacket – everything the future was predicted to be.  As always, Mountain Hardwear doesn't disappoint with a jacket that's stylish and extremely durable.

Gear Review: Keen Voyageur Shoes, Winterport Boots and Merino Wool Socks

Keen has always kept me safe and confident on the snowshoe trails - year after year.  What many people don't understand is that Keen's trail shoes are perfect for snowshoeing.  Keen's trademark rubber sole - curving over the toe of the shoe - fits wonderfully with most snowshoe bindings.  Keen shoes are convenient on many levels: They're rugged, tough, stylish, and engineered to withstand the cold outdoor elements.  This past season, I had the chance to test two different Keen boots, the Voyageur and Winterport, in combination with two different Keen merino wool socks.  After my review, I concluded only one thing: Same as usual...Keen products never disappoint.

Gear Review: The Keyhole Hands-free Camera Harness

Here at Snowshoe Magazine, we get to test some cool gear.  Generally, the gear we test is from an established company with a brand that most snowshoers are familiar with.  That's always a good thing.  But, in some rare cases, we actually get to test some gear from some real small biz innovators.  Thanks to BackcountrySolutions.com, we were able to test the Keyhole Hands-free Camera Harness.  If you're a photographer and a snowshoer - a lethal combo - the Keyhole should be your next investment.  Either way, this thing will keep your camera where it needs to be: In front of you at all times.

Gear Review: Marmot Andromeda Jacket and Gloves

One thing I love about Marmot's products is that they never underperform in a pinch.  Marmot makes tough, stylish outdoors wear and I never have been disappointed by what I review.  Recently, I had the chance to review my first jacket and glove combo: the Marmot Andromeda softshell jacket and softshell gloves.  This duo can be easily stored in a daypack and provide decent warmth during off-season snowshoe outings.  Although I wouldn't recommend the Andromeda jacket and gloves for cold, sub-zero snowshoeing, they're perfect for the more unpredictable fall and spring seasons.

Gear Review: GoMotion Sternum Luxeon LED Kit

When I first used the GoMotion Sternum kit, it was as if I was snowshoeing with a big headlight on my chest.  "That thing makes you look like Ironman with his 'glowing repulsor' heart," my snowshoeing buddy said.  Of course, nerdy comment aside, I did feel like Ironman; I discovered that an LED light makes the surrounding snow glow.  This nifty "glowing" effect comes in handy around dusk, when the sun drops below the mountains and darkness starts to set in.  I was automatically in love with my GoMotion light.  Every snowshoer needs one of these, in case it does get dark during a snowshoe outing.

Devoted to Snowshoeing, Devoted to Conquering the Near Impossible

For most people in the world, it was the start of a Saturday like any other: Some breakfast, maybe some coffee and a leisurely flip through the morning paper.  For Eileen Wysocki, resident of New Castle, Colo., it was a day she would never forget.  Her snowshoes, determination and focus on setting a world record were the only things furiously going through her mind on February 7.  It was time for the 24 Hours of Sunlight endurance race at the Sunlight Mountain Resort near Glenwood Springs, Colo.

Turpin Meadow Ranch: Snowshoeing in Wyoming’s Grand Teton Wild Country

"We cannot overlook the importance of wild country as a source of inspiration, to which we give expression in writing, in poetry, drawing and painting, in mountaineering, or in just being there."  – Olaus Murie

Traveling to Wyoming offers a unique opportunity to see countless landscapes – each representing a different brush stroke on a vast painting that seems to go on forever. At the focal point of this work of art is the northwestern corner of the state: Home to the majestic Yellowstone and Grand Teton National Parks…and the tranquil offerings of Turpin Meadow Ranch.

Gear Review: Outdoor Research Virtuoso Jacket

Jackets with fill down insulation offer a genuine shield from extremely cold weather and harsh winter conditions.  Lately, in Colorado, the conditions have been very extreme – with days recently hitting 19 below.  Of course, here in the Centennial State, life goes on when the weather is crazy.  During harsh walks to the bus and snowshoeing trips in the foothills, the Outdoor Research Virtuoso Jacket has been a lifesaver when the temperatures have reached dangerously cold levels.

Gear Review: Talus ColdAvenger High Performance Mask

When I snowshoe, it never fails: My chin and nose get colder than any other part of my body.  This happens particularly because it's the only exposed skin on my body when outside in the outdoor elements.  It's a problem that isn't easily remedied without the right gear, but most products on the market are either cheaply made or don't properly do the job.  This season, it's all about finding the right gear for the conditions…and I have solved yet another problem for my snowshoeing adventures.  Talus Outdoor Technologies created the ColdAvenger: A cold weather mask that allows you to breathe freely while keeping your face warm and dry.  I like that.

Gear Review: Outdoor Research Metaphor Jacket

Weighing in at approximately 39 ounces, the Outdoor Research Metaphor is a 3-in-1 jacket that I have continuously worn throughout Denver's latest bout with arctic weather.  I am living proof that this jacket does its job well at -18F.  Without it, I would be in a heap of trouble on these cold days in Colorado.  And it's not too often that these tests become available right outside my door.

Hydration Drink Review: Vital Action Performance Water

I enjoy a good hydration drink.  Although, nowadays, there are several to choose from and most drink coolers are full of choices that are obscure.  Coolers are also full of mainstream brand hydration and energy drinks, like Gatorade and Red Bull.  But, the influence of hydration water drinks has caught on, especially with snowshoers.  Vital Action Performance Water is a drink that replenishes and provides that extra boost necessary before and after a day of snowshoeing.

Gear Review: Ibex Kilometer Gloves

I once owned a pair of gloves – don't recall the brand name – that advertised to be the thinnest, warmest available.  They were made with wet suit material, which made them relatively thin and mildly warm.  What I didn't like about them was their inability to work with Velcro.  The wet suit material would stick to the Velcro and then slowly fray at the fingertips.  That sucks!  Although they were good gloves, I unknowingly gave them to a homeless man after misplacing them on the downtown bus.  Whoops.  I now have a new pair of gloves that are thin and warm AND work with Velcro: the Ibex Kilometer Gloves.  Sweet!

A Snowy Walk Through Glenwood Springs

Living in Colorado, I've had the opportunity to experience visiting several snowshoeing destinations that many people covet and dream about.  I take the mountains for granted and I'm not proud of it.  They are what I look at often as I go through life in Denver – although I rarely take advantage.  However, when I can absorb a majestic Rocky Mountain experience, one Colorado mountain town will forever have my heart: Glenwood Springs.  When I visit, I never take it for granted and nor do I want to leave.

Gear Review: Ibex Solace Jacket

I was introduced to Ibex wear last season.  Of course, I was impressed.  The experience of wearing New Zealand merino wool is amazing, especially in sub-zero temperatures.  However, this season, Ibex sent me a Solace jacket and a pair of Kilometer gloves to test (a review I will write later).  When the box arrived, I immediately entered running mode and started my test: It was cold outside and I was glad to be wearing Ibex gear again.

Gear Review: Nannini Mountain Sunglasses

This is the season of sunglasses.  First, Snowshoemag received advertising support from HaberVision and then Nannini wanted me to review some of their products.  Although I've been reviewing HaberVision's products, I had to give some other sunglasses and goggles a try.  What I found was that Nannini develops a solid product, a stylish product and manufactures several pairs of sunglasses that fit my gigantic noggin.  For snowshoeing, Nannini's Mountain specs are a genuine must for the upcoming season.

GV Snowshoes Technical Backpack

Over the years, I regularly receive an e-mail or a phone call from an eager snowshoer wanting advice on what kind of backpack to purchase.  Of course, I've tried many and have my opinions.  Where I find my opinion becomes rather fierce is the availability of a backpack engineered for snowshoers.   This is a very difficult item to find in the world.  Until now, conveniently!  This is because you're reading Snowshoe Magazine – the only publication focusing entirely on the sport of snowshoeing.  So, I introduce to you...GV Snowshoes' Technical Backpack for snowshoers.

The Ryan Alford Blog: Ode to Canada and Vermont

I've always been very fond of our neighbors to the north – and by that I mean Canada.  Throughout the past year, the United States has been neck deep in economic problems and a presidential election.  It's easy to look inward as a nation (we need to nowadays), but I think it's essential to our forward movement to see what the Canadians have been up to lately.  Of course, starting in February 2010, the whole world will look to its second largest country during the 21st Winter Olympics in Vancouver.  And I can't wait!

Gear Review: GoLite Phantom Jacket and DriMove L/S Top

I'm always delighted to test gear that's well made, bulletproof and waterproof. I've tested outdoor gear from Marmot (a favorite), The North Face, Columbia, to Arc'Teryx and a handful of other elite manufacturers. And so I finally got my hands on some GoLite gear. Although the Snowshoe Magazine gear-testing department is small, we have the honor of working with some of the best companies in the business. My initial thoughts and experiences with GoLite are phenomenal and I can only hope to get my hands on more.

Gear Review: HaberVision Prima and Riva Goggles

I rarely use goggles when snowshoeing.  For skiing they're great, obviously.  For snowshoeing, it's just another item to carry in your pack – probably taking up much needed room.  I now have a different perspective on this issue.

Gear Review: Nathan Sports X Trainer Mutation

I was first introduced to Nathan Sports' Hydration Packs in Glenwood Springs, Colo. I was browsing a gear store in the downtown area and happened to see the X Trainer Mutation Pack hanging near some jackets. Like a stray dog, I had to bring it home with me. So, I took it off the rack (noticing it was the only one left) and tried it on. I was sold!

Gear Review: HaberVision Cima Sunglasses

When snowshoeing, having a good pair of sunglasses available is necessary.  The snow can be blinding on a sunny day.  In fact, a backup pair of sunglasses should be in any snowshoer's gear arsenal.  But don't be deceived!  The idea of sunglasses should not conjure up thoughts of Oakley and over-priced Sunglass Huts.  HaberVision and its Cima model sunglasses combine polarized technology and style.  And I admit, I'm in love with my Cimas.

Gear Review: Outdoor Research Trance Sweater

Throughout the year, I've really learned to appreciate Outdoor Research gear – especially the Trance Sweater.  However, it's not really a sweater.  And it doesn't necessarily put you in a trance.  But it certainly is one of the warmest goose down insulated jackets I have worn: it's lightweight, versatile, packs in its own stuff sack, repels moisture and one piece of gear any person should keep in their snowshoeing arsenal.

Hydration Drink Review: Nuun for the Soul

I've been a fan of hydration drinks for a long time.  However, I'm being too general. In the past, when I thought of a hydration drink, I thought of Gatorade. Nowadays, when I think of an hydration drink...I think of Nuun. But this isn't your typical hydration drink - it's the start of what I believe is preferred hydration while out on the trail.

The Ryan Alford Blog: Things to do in Denver When You’re a Democrat

As promised, I am blogging about the Democratic National Convention. It hasn't been all that eventful for me, unfortunately. I work downtown near 15th and Lawrence, a few blocks from the epicenter of DNC hell. Because I've been asked to work off-site for a project, I haven't been near the action. In fact, I missed Joe Biden's visit to our local BBQ place in Writer Square. Bummer. It would've been nice to see him in the flesh.

The Ryan Alford Blog: YellowPagesGoesGreen.org

A paperless world is a big idea. Imagine that. No more newspapers, no more magazines, no more junk mail filling your mailbox. It's a big idea and certainly something to be appreciated. This concept – and the downfall of the print industry – is seen in small Internet movements around the world. One Internet movement, for instance, is YellowPagesGoesGreen.org. I love this site. It's also part of a healthy "green" initiative, if that gets your brain cooking. But, a paperless world certainly starts with eliminating the production of the White and Yellow Pages.

The Ryan Alford Blog: High Blood Pressure and a Sobering Dose of Reality

165 over 97. I forgot to take my blood pressure medication today. It's the weekend. My wife and kids are out of town. I'm way out of my routine, for sure. I feel like I'm 80 years old, yelling out to whoever can hear me, "Somebody get my pills!" It's sad but true, I have a massive high blood pressure problem. It's brought on by a mix of heredity and stress (probably some diet thrown in there too). Don't get me wrong, I exercise often - not enough I guess. I should probably be asleep right now too. But, the show must go on.

Gear Review: 3 Mountain Hardwear Jackets – Synchro, Parbat, and Transition

One thing I love about Mountain Hardwear is how their branding matches their product - it's a seamless connection between reliable and au courant for outdoor life. So, I got my hands on the Synchro, Parbat and the Transition jackets. All three are great for snowshoeing, but each take on a different scope for the type of shoeing you're pursuing for the day.

Gear Review: Marmot Heat Shield Jacket

It's springtime in the Rockies...and I'm testing a lineup of quality jackets. And, as one of my favorite brands of all-time, Marmot has provided yet another stellar product: the Heat Shield jacket. This Windstopper for some of the most unpredictable weather months of the year is a must-have for any snowshoe day-tripper.

Gear Review: Outdoor Research Trio Jacket

I love 3-in-1 jackets! They're perfect for snowshoeing. And, nothing works better and is more versatile for travel. Outdoor Research's Trio jacket is a 3-in-1 that I love having hanging in my closet; it's been a go-to choice for many of my snowshoeing excusions.

Snowshoe Magazine
One of the country's oldest annual snowshoe races is now one of the 22 United States Snowshoe Association's qualifying events for the USSSA PowerSox National Championship to be held at Utah's SnowBasin Resort March 9, 2008.

Gear Review: Marmot Exum Jacket

Simply stated, the Marmot Exum jacket is a powerhouse GORE-TEX mountaineering shell that excels in the harshest conditions. In fact, I'd feel safe wearing this thing while hiking Everest, but I'm just a snowshoer (nothing short of exceptional, I might add). And, I'd endorse the Exum as my shell jacket of choice - something every shoer should have in his or her shoeing arsenal.

Gear Review: Ibex Clive Jacket

Getting my hands on the Ibex Clive was like grasping the Holy Grail of snowshoeing jackets. It's been my long time plan to test some Ibex-made gear in some bitter cold snowshoeing weather.

Gear Review: Keen Newport Trail and Growler Boots

Last season, I had a chance to test the Keen Targhee II and the Ochoco - very impressed. This year I get to test the Newport Trail and Growler. Although these are more like boots rather than trail running shoes, I fell in love all over again. The Newport Trail and Growler rank high in my snowshoe arsenal. Again, I'm impressed all over again. Keen just makes a great shoe/boot.

Gear Review: MountainSmith Snow Series Tracker Backpack

Whoever designed the MountainSmith Snow Series Tracker is definitely a snowshoer - or at least a genius. Everything about the Tracker speaks snowshoeing: from the vertical snowshoe carry mounts to removable seat pad (I'll explain more later). After all my snowshoeing trips throughout the years, I've never owned a pack that's more versatile and perfect for snowshoeing than the Tracker.

Gear Review: Keen Targhee II Waterproof Shoe

Keen refers to the Targhee II as a “4-wheel drive for your feet” – and that's no lie. This is certainly a shoe I would recommend to any snowshoer and off-season hiker.

Gear Review: Marmot Cold Weather Down Jackets

The 2006/2007 winter season for Denver, Colo. was brutal. And I would know. I live there. And, I ride the bus to work, which requires me to wait at the bus stop as the snow comes down and gathers by the inches. Luckily, I had my Marmot Ama Dablam Jacket. The core of my body was warm; however, my head, hands, legs and feet were freezing. I guess I should've been wearing Marmot's 8000M Suit (as pictured). That would've been helpful.

Gear Review: Otterbox 1930 Case for the Blackberry 8700

I love discovering gear on the trail when crossing paths with another snowshoer. In this case, my fellow shoer was sporting an Otterbox case for his Palm Treo. And, not only was he using it to make some calls...he dropped it in the snow without a sudden gasp of "NNNooooo!!!" The case was waterproof...and indestructible (in the event the case was dropped off the side of a cliff). So, I naturally had to follow suit and get a case for my Blackberry.

Gear Review: Keen Ochoco Waterproof Trailrunning Shoe

I've tried several trail running shoes that can crossover to snowshoeing and have been overwhelmed with joy at how effective they are. Of course, boots are supposed to do their job...keep your feet warm and what not. It's the trail running shoe that can make or break your snowshoeing experience. I'm no runner, but the Keen Ochoco trail running shoe makes me want to start a career as a snowshoe running athlete.

Gear Review: SportHill Pursuit II Top, Junior XC Pants, 3SP Gloves

I first tested my SportHill garb by going for a night's run; it was about 20 degrees and I was working up a sweat. I donned a Pursuit II Top, Junior XC Pants, and a pair of 3SP Gloves. I couldn't wait for the snow and my chance to use my SportHill outfit for some intense snowshoeing. A week later, I got my wish.

Gear Review: Columbia Top-O-Graphic II

The Top-O-Graphic II performs as the base layer solution - for any winter sport. For snowshoeing, it's more than desirable: Lightweight, non-abrasive, comfortable, and geared for active use.

Gear Review: Marmot Super Hero Jacket

I guess the big question here is simply this: Does the Marmot Super Hero Jacket make you feel like a super hero? Sure it does. For snowshoeing, the Super Hero Jacket provides a lightweight solution when confronted with the cold winter elements.

The Rise of the Snowshoe Racing Regime – From the First Edition of Snowshoe Magazine

It was a day that many snowshoers would never forget. On March 5, 2005, the United States partook in a series of snowshoe races, peacefully bringing together some of the most talented athletes in the world. It was a day that would be resurrected in the memories of many and one that would usher-in the next era for the sport ... an era that would further prove its potential.

The Birth of a Magazine

I'm pregnant. Yup. I'm about nine months along. And, yes, I am a male...a pregnant one too. I still have a long way to go. ------------ Although I'm not an athlete, I'm using this space to gab ab...

Gear Review: The North Face Denali Jacket

I've slept in it on cold nights. I've used it to soak-up a small child's spit-up (and then washed it). I've used it to distract a bear from attacking my family as we hiked trough the Colorado wilderness (not true). And, I've used it for my many snowshoeing outings because it's lightweight, warm, and very comfortable for active use (very true).

Gear Review: The North Face Mountain Guide Jacket

I think of my North Face Mountain Guide Jacket as ol' reliable. I've taken this thing to the outer limits of extreme winter conditions...to offering it to my wife on a cool Autumn evening walk. It's a great friend to have for the everyday, and a better friend to have in a bitter cold pinch.

Rolling With the Punches

Snowshoe Magazine
I'm not quite sure why life invites change in big, and sometimes unreasonable chunks. The month of May has been one of the biggest, life-changing months in my Earthly existence. And when I thought I couldn't handle the pressure, I realized two important factors (despite the surrounding chaos): Snowshoe Magazine must go on and the print version needs life.

The Snowshoe Magazine Summer Blog

The Multi-Tool: Never Go Snowshoeing With Out It

Snowshoe Magazine
What is a multi-tool? A lifesaver. It was about 20 degrees, I was exploring the Rocky Mountain National Park and I was trudging through about three feet of fresh snow. The day was slipping away as Longs Peak hovered above me and the sun was setting behind the majestic mountain-scarred horizon. It was getting colder by the moment.

Step Into Our Snowshoes

Snowshoe Magazine
It's hard to believe that only a few months ago I was handed a pair of snowshoes...and with that I thought of snowshoeing in the sense of a celestial publishing venture that only few could understand at the time. From that point on, I have a more respectful sense of the historical beginnings, the reverential athletes, the tourist-born admirers and the snow-covered land that communally support the art of snowshoeing. It is a symbiosis worth meditating on.
